Jeep started the popular trend of building SUVs, and the 2023 Grand Cherokee has all that expertise and knowledge seamlessly built in. This luxury SUV has muscular good looks, a luxurious cabin and all of Jeep’s legendary off-road ability.
Notable Changes From the Previous Year
The Grand Cherokee was redesigned in 2022, so it comes into 2023 with very minor changes. The Trailhawk trim is no longer available, as it’s now offered as a 4xe plug-in hybrid.
Trims
There are six Grand Cherokee trims for 2023. The entry-level models are the Laredo at $57,740* and the Altitude at $61,740*. The middle of the list finds the Limited at $65,740* and the Overland at $74,640*. The premium trims are the Summit at $79,740*and the Summit Reserve at $84,740*.
Infotainment and Technology Features
The Laredo and Altitude both run the UConnect 5 infotainment system on an 8.4-inch full-colour touchscreen that is mounted at the centre of the dashboard. The high-end trims all run the same infotainment software, with the addition of navigation, on a 10.1-inch touchscreen. Bluetooth connectivity, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard across all trims. Alexa connectivity generates a virtual assistant to link home and car into one seamless entity. The rear seat passengers are well catered for with dual 10.1-inch touchscreens mounted into the rear of the front seats, running the Rear-Seat Entertainment System.
The standard audio system in the Grand Cherokee has six speakers and is fitted to the entry-level trims. The Summit has an Alpine system with nine-inch speakers, but the premium 19-speaker audio system from McIntosh is standard in the Summit Reserve.
The driver’s information system is housed in a fully customisable 10.25-inch digital cluster. hasn’t been ignored.
Exterior Design
The exterior design of the Grand Cherokee is attractive and functional. The seven-segment grille splits the sleek LED headlights, giving the Cherokee a muscular but sophisticated look. There are options in terms of wheels with 17-inch, 18-inch and 19-inch wheels on offer, and these can be polished or matt silver, or black.
The long body is finely balanced, and the rear of the vehicle is as attractive as the front. There is an enormous expanse of glass at the back, with eye-catching LED taillights and distinctive turn signals. Above the rear bumper is a slim silver trim, contrasting attractively with the black bumper.
Interior Comfort and Cargo Space
The interior of the Grand Cherokee is eye candy, and luxury living rolled into one. There’s seating for five people and more leg and headroom than you could ever want. Sixteen-way adjustable seats that are heated and have memory functionality are standard across all models. The dash is swathed in sumptuous materials, and the premium trims have beautiful natural wood trims.
The entry-level models have cloth upholstered seats while the Overlander has Nappa leather-faced seats and door trims, but the Summit has high levels of luxury with soft quilted leather seat covers with contrast stitching.
The cabin boasts air conditioning in the entry-level trims with full climate control in higher-spec models. There is soft ambient lighting to add to the mood.
Not only is there head and leg room to spare, but the same can be said for the cargo space, which is very generous. With the rear seats raised, there’s 1,067 litres of cargo space. Lay the seats flat, and you’ll get 2,005 litres of space for your luggage. For those long wilderness trips, you can tow a trailer up to 2,812 kilograms.
Performance Features (Engine Type, Horsepower, Torque)
The Grand Cherokee has only one powertrain on offer. This is a 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 making 260 lb-ft of torque and 293 horsepower. This motor drives all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Included is the Selec-Terrain traction management system, which allows drivers to select different drive modes depending on the driving conditions and terrain. The drive modes are auto, rock, sport, mud or sand, and snow.
The Grand Cherokee has reasonable fuel consumption for a big car with all-wheel drive. Drivers can expect around 12.3 L/100km, and when cruising the highway, you’ll get around 9.2 L/100km.
Safety and Driver Assistance Features
Jeep wants you to stay safe and sound, so there’s a full range of active and passive safety systems. These include a full set of airbags, as well as safety systems such as active lane management, adaptive cruise control, a rearview backup camera, blind-spot and rear cross-path detection, forward collision warning with emergency braking, pedestrian and cyclist detection, and ParkSense parking sensors with emergency braking.
A Classy and Luxurious SUV
The 2023 Jeep Cherokee is a multi-faceted SUV combining an outdoorsy but sophisticated image. This vehicle has a smooth, composed drive with plenty of power at your fingertips. The entry-level trims are competitively priced and offer a simple package, but the Summit and Summit Reserve offer true luxury and many upmarket features.
